The Part-Time Job Hunt (Get Hired Fast)

⚠️ The "24-Hour" Rule (2025 Update):

  • During Classes: You can work maximum 24 hours/week off-campus.
  • During Scheduled Breaks (Summer/Winter): You can work Unlimited hours.
  • The Risk: Do not work "Cash Jobs" to bypass this. If caught, you lose your Study Permit.

📄 1. The Resume Transformation (India vs. Canada)

Your Indian "Biodata" will fail here. You must "Canadianize" it.

❌ The "Desi" Mistakes (Delete These Immediately)

  • No Photos: In Canada, including a photo is seen as unprofessional and a risk for discrimination.
  • No Personal Details: Remove "Father's Name," "Marital Status," "Religion," "Age," and full home address.
  • No "Hobbies": Nobody cares if you like "Listening to Music." Remove it.

✅ The Canadian Format (ATS Friendly)

  • Header: Name | Canadian Phone Number | Email | LinkedIn URL | City (e.g., Brampton, ON).
  • Summary: 2-3 lines highlighting your skills (e.g., "Reliable student with 2 years of retail experience...").
  • Availability: Crucial for Students. Add a line: "Available to work: Mon-Fri after 4 PM, Weekends: Full Day." (Employers hire based on availability first, skills second).
  • Experience: Use "Action Verbs."
    • Bad: "I worked at a shop."
    • Good: "Managed cash register and processed $1,000+ in daily transactions."

🛡️ 2. The "High-Value" Student Jobs (Certifications)

Don't just apply to Tim Hortons. Get a license to earn more.

👮 A. Security Guard (The "Study While You Earn" Job)

  • Why: You often sit at a desk in a condo/office. You can study during quiet shifts.
  • The Pay: $18 - $22 / hour.
  • The Cost:
    • Course: ~$100 - $150 (40 hours online).
    • CPR/First Aid: ~$100.
    • License Fee: ~$80.
    • Total Investment: ~$300 CAD. (You earn this back in 3-4 shifts).

🍺 B. Smart Serve / Bartender (The "Tips" Job)

  • Why: In Canada, servers get Minimum Wage PLUS Tips. You can earn $30/hour on a Friday night.
  • Requirement: In Ontario, you MUST have a Smart Serve Certificate to touch alcohol.
  • The Cost: ~$45 CAD (Online course, takes 4 hours).
  • Where to Apply: Boston Pizza, Jack Astor's, Local Pubs.

💵 3. Wage Expectations (Oct 2025 Rates)

Know your worth. Do not accept less than this.

  • Ontario (General Minimum Wage): $17.60 / hour.
  • British Columbia: $17.85 / hour.
  • Student Minimum Wage (Under 18): $16.60 (Ontario only).
  • Cash Jobs: Usually pay $10 - $12/hour (Illegal & Unsafe). Avoid.

🗣️ 4. The Interview Script (Crush It)

Canadian interviews are casual but direct.

Q1: "Tell me about yourself."

  • Wrong Answer: "My name is Raj, my father is a farmer, I came to Canada for better future..." (Too personal).
  • Right Answer: "I am a Business student at Humber College. Back in India, I managed a team of 3 at a retail store where I learned how to handle difficult customers. I am looking for a fast-paced environment where I can use those skills." (Professional & Relevant).

Q2: "What is your availability?"

  • The Trap: Don't say "Anytime." It sounds desperate.
  • The Answer: "I have classes in the mornings, so I am fully available every weekday after 4 PM and anytime on weekends." (Specific & Reliable).

Q3: "Why should we hire you?"

  • The Answer: "I live 10 minutes away (reliable), I have previous cash-handling experience (skilled), and I have my Smart Serve certification ready (qualified)."

🚀 5. Where to Apply (The "Hidden" Market)

  • Online: Indeed.ca, LinkedIn (Low success rate for part-time).
  • The "Walk-In" Strategy (Best for Students):
    • Print 20 resumes.
    • Go to a Mall (Square One / Bramalea City Centre).
    • Walk into stores with a "We Are Hiring" sign.
    • Ask to speak to the Manager. (Do not give the resume to a cashier; they might throw it away).
    • Script: "Hi, I'm a student living nearby, available evenings and weekends. I saw you're hiring and wanted to drop this off personally."
