Digital Survival: Must-Have Apps

Status: Essential Tech for Daily Life

The Golden Rule: Data is expensive in Canada. Download these apps on Wi-Fi before you leave the house.

🚌 A. Getting Around (Don't Freeze at the Bus Stop)

Google Maps is good, but these are better.

  1. Transit App (Green Icon):
    • Why you need it: Google Maps tells you the scheduled time. The Transit App tells you the real-time location of the bus.
    • TVT Tip: In winter, never wait at the bus stop for 15 minutes. Check the "Transit" app and leave your house only when the bus is 5 minutes away.
  2. Uber & Lyft:
    • Why: Taxis can be hard to hail on the street.
    • Cost Warning: Uber is expensive. A 20-minute ride can cost $40+ during "surge pricing." Always check both Uber and Lyft to compare prices.

🍔 B. Food & Groceries (Saving Money)

Eating out is a luxury. Cooking is a necessity.

  1. Flipp (The Money Saver):
    • What it is: It collects digital flyers from all grocery stores (Walmart, No Frills, FreshCo).
    • The "Price Match" Hack: If Walmart sells milk for $5, but you see it on the Flipp app at No Frills for $3, show the cashier at Walmart the Flipp app. They will match the price. You just saved $2.
  2. PC Optimum:
    • What it is: The biggest loyalty program in Canada.
    • Where it works: Shoppers Drug Mart (Medicines), No Frills/Superstore (Groceries), Esso (Gas).
    • Why: You earn points on everything. Students often get $100+ worth of free groceries a year just by scanning this free app.
  3. SkipTheDishes:
    • Context: UberEats is popular, but SkipTheDishes is often cheaper and has more restaurant options in smaller Canadian cities.

🛒 C. Buying & Renting (The "Used Market")

Canadians buy almost everything used. It is smart, not cheap.

  1. Kijiji (The King of Resale):
    • What it is: Canada's version of OLX.
    • Use it for: Finding a basement for rent, buying used furniture, or finding part-time cash jobs (snow shoveling).
    • Safety Rule: Never pay money before seeing the item. Meet in public places (like a Tim Hortons parking lot).
  2. Facebook Marketplace:
    • Extremely active in Canada for finding rooms for rent and cheap winter jackets.

🌤️ D. The Weather (It's Not Just About Temperature)

  1. The Weather Network:
    • Why: Do not look at the "Temperature." Look at the "Feels Like" (Windchill).
    • Example: The thermometer might say -5°C, but the windchill makes it feel like -15°C. Dress for the windchill, or you will get frostbite.

💼 E. For Students Only: Job Search

  1. Indeed: The #1 app for entry-level jobs (Tim Hortons, Walmart, Security Guard).
  2. LinkedIn: Essential for corporate/office jobs.
