Emergency: Contacts & Help

We hope you never use this page. But if you do, these numbers will save you. Screenshot this page now.

🚑 A. The "Big Three" Canadian Services

These work 24/7 on any phone, even without a SIM card.

  1. 9-1-1 (Police, Fire, Ambulance)
    • When to call: Car accidents, heart attacks, fire, or if you see a crime happening.
    • Don't speak English? Say "Hindi" or "Gujarati" to the operator immediately. They have translators on the line.
  2. 8-1-1 (Non-Emergency Health)
    • What it is: A free "Tele-Health" line.
    • When to call: You have a fever, a rash, or your child is sick, and you don't know if you should go to the hospital. A Registered Nurse will answer and tell you what to do.
    • Available in: BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and most other provinces.
  3. 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline)
    • What it is: A new national 24/7 support line for mental health crises. If you or a friend is feeling suicidal or overwhelmed, call or text this number immediately.

🛂 C. "I Lost My Passport!" (The Action Plan)

This is the most common panic situation. Follow these steps exactly.

  1. File a Police Report: Go to the nearest Canadian police station. Tell them your passport was lost/stolen. You need the "Police Report Number" to apply for a new one.
  2. Contact the Consulate: Go to the BLS International website (the agency that handles Indian passports in Canada) or the Consulate website for your jurisdiction.
  3. Apply for "Re-Issue": You will need to submit:
    • The Police Report.
    • Annexure 'F' (Affidavit stating how it was lost).
    • Photocopy of the lost passport (You have this because you followed Part 1 of this guide!).
    • Proof of Status (Study Permit/Visitor Record).

🚧 D. City Services (3-1-1)

  • Number: Dial 3-1-1 (in major cities like Toronto/Vancouver/Calgary).
  • When to call:
    • "My landlord isn't giving heat."
    • "They didn't pick up my garbage."
    • "There is a pothole on the road."
    • "My neighbor is making noise at 2 AM."
