Using an Indian driving licence in Canada

Updated 26 Aug 2026Verified against Ontario, ICBC, Government of Canada, Province of B.C.

The short answer

An Indian driving licence lets you drive in Ontario for 60 days and in British Columbia for 90 days after you become a resident, and then you need that province's own licence. India has no exchange agreement with either, so you must pass local tests. But documented Indian driving experience shortens the process: two proven years skip BC's novice program, and up to one year is credited in Ontario.

Your Indian licence works in Canada, but only for a while. Driving rules are set by each province, so the exact window and the path to a permanent licence depend on where you land. This guide covers Ontario and British Columbia, the two provinces most Indian newcomers move to.

Can you drive right away?

Yes, for a fixed number of days after you become a resident, and then you need the province’s own licence. The clock starts when you settle, not when you land as a visitor.

By the numbers

60 days

How long a new Ontario resident may drive on a valid Indian (or any foreign) licence before an Ontario licence is required.

Ontario — Exchange a foreign driver's licence

90 days

How long you may drive in British Columbia on your existing foreign licence after moving here, before switching to a B.C. licence.

ICBC — Moving from another country

Start the licensing process early in that window, because booking a road test can take weeks and the window does not pause while you wait for a slot.

Driving past your window, or uninsured, is a serious offence

Once your 60 or 90 days lapse, driving on the Indian licence alone is illegal. Driving without insurance is worse: in Ontario a first conviction carries a fine of at least $5,000 (up to $25,000) under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, plus possible licence suspension and vehicle impoundment. Never let the window expire and never drive an uninsured car.

The DL extract and IDP

Two Indian documents smooth the move: an International Driving Permit gets you driving on day one, and a driving licence extract proves how long you have been behind the wheel. They do different jobs, so bring both.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

  • An official translation of your Indian licence, carried with it rather than replacing it
  • Get it in India before you fly; you cannot obtain one in Canada
  • Valid one year, useful during your driving window, but it does not extend that window

Driving licence extract (RTO abstract)

  • An official RTO record of when your licence was first issued and its history
  • Proves your years of experience to skip road-test waiting and lower insurance
  • Request it from your RTO before leaving; get it translated if not in English

The extract is the document that unlocks experience credit. Both Ontario and ICBC need proof from the issuing authority, not just the plastic card, to count your Indian driving toward a faster licence and a cheaper premium.

Ontario licensing

Ontario uses a graduated system, G1 to G2 to full G, and because India has no exchange agreement you must test through it rather than swap your licence. From July 1, 2026, up to one year of documented foreign experience is credited, which shortens the wait.

  1. Pass the vision and knowledge test (G1)

Book at a DriveTest centre. A vision screening and a written road-rules test earn your G1 learner licence. You may drive only with a fully licensed driver beside you.

You hold a G1 and can start practising.

  2. Take the G2 road test

With a valid original Indian licence plus an authentication document from the issuing authority, you can be credited up to one year of experience, which is enough to take the G2 road test right away instead of serving the usual G1 waiting period.

Passing gives you a G2, so you can now drive alone.

  3. Take the full G road test

After holding G2 and meeting the required driving time, you take the final G road test on higher-speed roads. It removes the last restrictions.

You hold a full G licence.

Bring your authentication document in English or French; without it, Ontario cannot credit your Indian experience and you serve the full waiting periods.

British Columbia licensing

BC’s ICBC runs a graduated program, L to N to full Class 5, but proving more than two years of non-learner Indian driving lets you skip it entirely. That proof is the whole game.

  1. Visit an ICBC office and prove your experience

Surrender your Indian licence and show an acceptable driving record, meaning a licence or RTO record showing at least two years of driving, translated by an ICBC-approved translator if it is not in English.

ICBC sets the licence class you can test for.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

A multiple-choice test on BC road rules and signs. You can take it online, and the result is valid for one year.

You are cleared to book a road test.

  3. Pass one road test for a full Class 5

With more than two years proven, you skip the L and N stages and take a single road test for a full Class 5 licence. Without that proof, you enter the full Graduated Licensing Program instead: an L stage held at least a year, then an N stage and two road tests, about three years start to finish.

You hold a full BC Class 5 licence.

Insurance reality

New-driver insurance is expensive, because premiums track years of driving experience and a fresh Canadian licence reads as zero. Proving your Indian years is what brings the cost down.

By the numbers

40 years

Driving experience ICBC recognises for Basic insurance discounts. A brand-new licence starts at zero, which is why new drivers pay the most.

ICBC — Drivers, experience and crash history

15 years

The maximum prior experience ICBC will credit from an acceptable foreign driving record, so proving your Indian years directly lowers your premium.

ICBC — Proving your driving experience

Ontario’s auto insurance is sold by private insurers, but the pattern is the same: they reward years licensed and a clean record, new drivers pay more, and rates vary sharply by city. In both provinces, the driving-record extract from your RTO is what turns your Indian experience into a discount, so carry it, translated, and give it to your insurer.

Winter driving basics

Winter driving is a new skill, not just cold weather. Snow, black ice and long dark evenings all change how a car behaves. Prepare for it before the first snowfall.

Before your first Canadian winter

  • Fit winter tyres

In BC, winter tyres or chains are required on designated highways from October 1 to April 30 (some routes end March 31). Ontario has no province-wide law, but insurers must offer a winter-tyre discount.

  • Slow down and leave more space

Stopping distances on snow and ice are far longer. Brake gently and early; leave a bigger gap to the car ahead.

  • Clear all snow and ice before you drive

Windows, mirrors, lights and the roof. Driving with a snow-covered view or a plated windshield is unsafe and ticketable.

  • Watch for black ice

Bridges, shaded patches and early mornings freeze first. If the road looks wet but it is below zero, treat it as ice.

What to do next

Common questions

Can I drive in Canada with an Indian driving licence?

Yes, but only for a short window after you become a resident, and driving is regulated by each province. In Ontario you may drive on a valid Indian licence for 60 days; in British Columbia, 90 days. After that you need the province's own licence. India has no licence-exchange agreement with either, so you cannot simply swap. You have to pass the local knowledge and road tests.

How long can I drive on my Indian licence in Ontario?

Sixty days. Once you become an Ontario resident, a valid licence from India (or any country) is good for 60 days. After that you must hold an Ontario licence to drive. Because India has no exchange agreement, you take a vision test, a knowledge test, and the G2 and G road tests to earn the full G licence.

Do I have to give a road test to convert my Indian licence in BC?

Yes, at least one. India is not an exchange country, so ICBC requires a knowledge test and a road test. If you can prove more than two years of non-learner driving experience with an acceptable Indian driving record, you skip the Graduated Licensing Program and go straight to a full Class 5 after those two tests. Without that proof, you enter the full L-N-Class 5 program.

What is a driving licence extract and why do I need it in Canada?

A driving licence extract is an official record from your Indian RTO showing when your licence was first issued and its history. Ontario and ICBC use it to grant credit for your past driving, which shortens testing and lowers insurance. If it is not in English, ICBC requires a translation by an approved translator. Request it from your RTO before you leave India.

Is car insurance expensive for new immigrants in Canada?

Usually yes, at first. Premiums are tied to years of driving experience, and a new Canadian licence counts as zero. In BC, ICBC credits up to 15 years of prior experience from an acceptable foreign driving record, which directly cuts your premium, so proving your Indian years matters. Rates also vary by city and insurer, and improve each year you drive crash-free.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Canada?

For the first weeks, an International Driving Permit (IDP) helps. It is an official translation of your Indian licence, carried alongside it rather than replacing it. You must get it in India before you fly; you cannot obtain one in Canada. It is valid for one year. It does not extend the 60-day (Ontario) or 90-day (BC) window you get as a new resident.
