Studying abroad from India means clearing two approvals, not one: an admission, and a student visa. The visa is the harder half. Canada gives up to three years of post-study work and the only direct route to permanent residence of the four. The UK is the fastest and cheapest, but its Graduate Route drops to 18 months in January 2027. The USA has the highest earning ceiling and, since September 2026, ties your stay to the end date on your I-20. Australia gives two years, three after a research degree. All in, tuition and living run from about ₹31–59 lakh for a one-year British master’s to ₹73–150 lakh for a two-year American one. A Canadian file for Fall 2027 needs to start by November 2026.

Rupee figures are approximate, converted at August 2026 rates. Tuition and living ranges are indicative and vary by institution and city. Every figure a government sets, whether proof of funds or application fees, is linked to its official source on the country pages, because those change and a number copied out of date is worse than a link.

And when we would tell you not to go

  • You are funding it on a loan you cannot service

A degree abroad is worth it when the job after it clears the debt before it. If the numbers only work assuming a best-case salary, they do not work.

  • You are switching field with no story

Changing direction is fine and often sensible. Changing direction with nothing connecting it to what you have already done is the single most common reason a permit is refused.

  • You want permanent residence but picked the wrong country

Study is a route to staying in some countries and not in others. Choosing on ranking alone, then discovering there is no pathway, is an expensive way to learn the difference.

Why do study visa applications get refused?

Four things decide a study application, and all four are set in motion long before anyone fills in a form.

  • An SOP written for the wrong reader

A statement that reads well to an admissions committee can still fail a visa officer, who is testing whether your plan is coherent and whether you intend to come home.

What we doThe SOP is written to satisfy both tests at once, and checked against your own profile rather than a template.

  • Funds that are insufficient, or unexplained

Officers look at whether the money is genuinely available to you, not only whether the balance is large enough. Unexplained deposits are treated as exactly what they look like.

What we doFunds are assembled and documented to the standard the post applies, with the source of every major deposit accounted for.

  • A programme that does not follow from your past study

A sharp change of field with no explanation invites the conclusion that the course is a means to a visa rather than an education.

What we doShortlisting starts from your actual trajectory, and where a change of field is the right call, the file explains it rather than leaving it to be inferred.

  • Weak ties to home, on paper

Most refusals turn on funding or on whether you will return. The second is an evidence problem as much as an intention one.

What we doTies-to-home evidence is assembled deliberately, rather than assumed to be obvious.

How long

How long does a study permit take?

IRCC publishes this per country and changes it about weekly. This is read from their feed, not typed in.

India sits mid-table for study permits, not at the slow end. The delay people actually feel is usually the weeks before filing, spent chasing a document the file was always going to need.

Questions people actually ask

Which country is best to study abroad from India?

There is no single best country. There is the one that fits whichever trade-off matters most to you: cost, how long you can work afterwards, and whether study leads to permanent residence. Canada gives up to three years of post-study work and a direct route to permanent residence through Express Entry. The United Kingdom is the fastest and cheapest at roughly ₹31–59 lakh for a one-year master's, but its Graduate Route falls to 18 months in January 2027 and study leads to settlement only through a work visa afterwards. The United States has the highest earning ceiling and the least certain immigration path. Australia sits between them, with two years of work rights and points-tested skilled migration. Decide which of the three trade-offs you are actually optimising for, and the shortlist writes itself rather than being assembled from rankings.

How much does it cost to study abroad from India?

Budget roughly ₹31–59 lakh for a one-year master's in the United Kingdom, ₹48–83 lakh for a two-year master's in Canada, ₹68–102 lakh in Australia and ₹73–150 lakh in the United States, covering tuition plus living costs at August 2026 exchange rates. Treat these as indicative bands built from published tuition and living-cost ranges rather than as quotes, because your real number turns on the city, the institution and the exchange rate on the day you pay. A course in Toronto and the same course in a smaller Ontario city are not the same expense. Read the totals carefully before comparing, because they are not directly comparable: a one-year British master's and a two-year Canadian one are different purchases, and setting the two figures side by side makes the shorter course look cheaper than it is per year. Work out the cost per year, and the length of the work rights that follow, and then compare.

How much money do I need to show for a student visa?

Enough to cover first-year tuition plus a government-set living-cost figure, and it has to be genuinely available to you rather than parked in an account for the application. Every country asks a version of the same question and each sets its own number. Canada requires first-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for a single applicant outside Quebec, rising with each accompanying family member, a figure IRCC re-indexes. The United Kingdom requires maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days before you apply. Australia sets a living-cost figure through Home Affairs. In the United States you prove funds twice, once for the I-20 and again at the visa interview. Across all four, unexplained deposits are treated as exactly what they look like, so the history behind the balance is doing as much work in the file as the balance itself.

Should I apply for admission or the study permit first?

Admission comes first, because a study permit application needs a letter of acceptance from the institution before it can be lodged at all. That is the mechanical answer and it is the one most people are given. The more useful answer is that the sequence is exactly why the two should be planned together rather than treated as separate projects with separate advisers. A shortlist chosen without your visa profile in mind can produce an offer that will not survive the permit stage, and by then the money is spent and the intake is close. The decision that sinks a permit is usually taken at shortlisting, months before anyone reads the application: the wrong programme for your background, the wrong institution for your funds, the wrong city for your story. Choose the course with the visa in view and the permit stage gets easier.

Why do study visa applications get refused when the student already has an offer?

Because an offer and a visa are decided on completely different tests, by people asking different questions. An institution asks whether you can do the course. A visa officer asks whether you can fund it, whether the course choice is coherent given what you have already studied, and whether you are likely to go home afterwards. A student who passes the first test convincingly can fail all three parts of the second, which is why a refusal after an offer feels arbitrary and is not. Four causes account for most of them: a statement of purpose written for the wrong reader, funds that are insufficient or unexplained, a programme that does not follow from your past study, and weak evidence of ties to home. All four are visible before you apply, and all four are fixable then.

How long can I work after I graduate?

It depends entirely on the country, and this is the number most worth comparing before you choose one rather than after you arrive. Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit runs up to three years, tied to your programme length. Australia's Temporary Graduate visa gives two years after a bachelor's or coursework master's and three after a research degree. The United Kingdom's Graduate Route gives 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027, down from two years, and three years after a PhD. The United States gives 12 months of Optional Practical Training, plus 24 more in STEM fields. Set those against the tuition figures and the comparison changes shape, because the cheapest degree is not always the one that buys the most time to earn afterwards, and the time to earn is what repays the degree.

Can I get permanent residence after studying abroad?

It depends on the country, and the four differ more than the marketing suggests. In Canada, often: Canadian study and Canadian work experience both count toward Express Entry and several provincial nominee streams, though study grants no permanent residence by itself. Australia runs points-tested skilled migration that Australian study can contribute points toward. The United Kingdom has no settlement route from study at all: you switch to a qualifying work visa first and settle after years on it. The United States requires employer sponsorship before any green card, which puts the decision in somebody else's hands. Choosing a country on rankings and discovering afterwards that it has no pathway is an expensive mistake, and it is the most common one we are asked to fix. Decide what you want the degree to lead to before you decide where to take it.

Do you only handle the visa, or the university applications too?

Both, as one file: university shortlisting, the statement of purpose, the applications and the study permit. We do not take on the visa alone at the end of somebody else's admission work, and the reason is not commercial. Decisions made at the shortlisting stage determine how difficult the permit stage will be, and those two stages are usually handled by different people who never speak to each other. The student pays for that twice, once in fees and once in a refusal that was decided months earlier by a course choice nobody checked against a visa profile. Keeping them together means the programme, the funds and the story you are telling stay consistent from the first conversation to the last document. That is the only version of this work where the permit stage is straightforward rather than a rescue, and it is why we will not split it.

Can you guarantee my visa will be approved?

Nobody can guarantee a visa approval, and anyone who offers to is selling something they cannot deliver. The decision belongs to a visa officer applying published criteria to your file, and no consultant, licensed or otherwise, sits inside that decision. It is worth remembering when you are comparing quotes, because a guarantee is the cheapest thing in the world to promise and the most expensive to believe. What we do instead is tell you plainly when a route is not realistic yet, and what would make it realistic: a different programme, a different intake, another year of funds with a history behind them. That answer is sometimes not the one people came for, and it is the one that saves the fee. A refusal costs more than the advice that would have prevented it.
