A partner, parent or child application should be planned in months rather than weeks, and decisions that depend on it, such as giving notice at work or ending a tenancy, should be made on that basis. The other practical use of it is as a test of advice. Anybody quoting you the three-week figure for a family application is quoting the wrong row of the table, and it is worth asking what else they have read across. Read the row that matches your own route before planning anything around it.

UKVI offers paid priority and super priority services, and where they are available they replace the standard timescale with a much shorter one, which is a genuine difference rather than a marginal one. The catch is availability. It changes by route and by country, it is suspended without much notice when demand rises, and it is not guaranteed to be open when you want it. So check the visa application centre booking system for your own city rather than assuming the service exists because a page describes it.
