Changing your name in an Indian passport

Three things, and all of them have to be in hand before you apply rather than gathered afterwards. Two original full newspaper pages carrying your name-change advertisement, one in a regional-language paper and one in English, and it must be the whole page rather than a clipping. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper declaring the change. And your other photo IDs, Aadhaar and PAN, already updated to the new name, because an application where the supporting IDs still carry the old one creates exactly the mismatch the process exists to resolve. You then apply for a reissue at your Passport Seva Kendra with all of it together. The sequence is what costs people time: the ads and the ID updates take weeks, and the appointment is the quick part at the end. Keep the whole newspaper, not the cutting, because the page is the proof.

Not always, and this is worth checking before you spend money on advertisements you may not need. For a change of surname after marriage you can usually apply with a marriage certificate and, where the names do not match across documents, a joint declaration. A newspaper advertisement is not always required for that route. A full change of name, or a change not tied to marriage, is different: it does need the two newspaper advertisements and the notarised affidavit, with no shortcut around either. Which route applies depends on exactly what is changing, and the boundary is not always where people assume, particularly where a first name is changing as well as a surname. Confirm your own case before booking the ads, because the ads are the part you cannot get a refund on.

In Gujarat, major name changes are scheduled at the Ahmedabad Passport Seva Kendra rather than at your local Post Office PSK, because the Ahmedabad centre handles these cases for the state. Rajkot is a last resort, used only where Ahmedabad is genuinely not workable. That routing surprises people who have used their district counter for every other passport service and reasonably expect to use it for this one. Plan for the journey when you plan the timeline, particularly if you are coming from Saurashtra or the far south of the state, since it is a day rather than a morning. This is a Gujarat routing rule rather than a national one. Applicants in other states apply through their own regional arrangements, so advice from elsewhere may not describe what happens here. Book the Ahmedabad slot first and arrange the travel around it, since slots there move faster than your calendar does.

The passport reissue itself runs on the normal timeline of roughly 30 working days after the appointment, or a few working days under Tatkal. That is the part people plan around, and it is the shorter half. The preparation is what actually takes the time. Placing the two advertisements and waiting for the papers, getting the affidavit notarised, and then updating Aadhaar and PAN to the new name typically adds a few weeks before you are even ready to book an appointment. So the honest total is closer to two months than to one, and it is longer if any of the ID updates run into a query. Start the advertisements and the ID updates first, on the day you decide, rather than treating them as paperwork to sort out nearer the appointment. Everything else waits on them, and nothing can be done in parallel.
