What it is accepted for

IRCC accepts the PTE Core option for Express Entry. PTE Academic is the version universities ask for, and the two are separate tests.

Who it suits

People who would rather be marked by a computer than sit across from an examiner, and people who need a result quickly. The speaking section is recorded rather than conducted as an interview.

What it will not do

Which one you need depends on what you are applying for, and the names do not help: Core is the immigration test and Academic is the university test, so the more serious-sounding one is the wrong answer for a PR profile.
