Parents and grandparents sponsorship intake is paused
IRCC paused intake to the Parents and Grandparents Program on 15 July 2026 and will not take new interest to sponsor forms or invite sponsors until further notice. Applications already in the system are still being processed, which is why many families believe the programme is open.
The short answers
Can I sponsor my parents for Canadian PR right now?
No. IRCC stopped accepting interest to sponsor forms for the Parents and Grandparents Program on 15 July 2026 and is not inviting anyone to apply until further notice.
What happens to a parents and grandparents application already submitted?
It keeps being processed. IRCC said it planned to approve up to 15,000 people for permanent residence through the programme in 2026, and processing those cases continues.
When does parents and grandparents sponsorship reopen?
No date has been given. IRCC's notice says it will not receive new interest to sponsor forms or invite potential sponsors until further notice.
Can parents still visit Canada while sponsorship is paused?
The super visa is the route IRCC names in the same notice. It is a visitor visa rather than permanent residence, and it allows a stay of five years at a time with multiple entries for up to ten years.
Before and after
- Until 15 July 2026
- IRCC accepted interest to sponsor forms and invited sponsors to apply.
- Since 15 July 2026
- No new forms are accepted and nobody is being invited, until further notice.
What changed
The Parents and Grandparents Program is the route a Canadian citizen or permanent resident uses to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence. It has never worked on a first-come basis. Sponsors submit an interest to sponsor form, IRCC draws from the pool of people who did, and only those invited can file an application. The pause announced on 15 July 2026 stops the first step: no new forms are being taken and nobody is being invited.
That distinction is why so many families believe the programme is still open. Applications filed before the pause are still moving. IRCC said it planned to approve up to 15,000 people for permanent residence through the programme in 2026, in line with the levels plan, and processing those cases continues. What has stopped is the intake, not the department.
The reason IRCC gave is arithmetic rather than policy. Interest in the programme keeps exceeding the number of spaces the levels plan sets aside for it, and the department says pausing intake is how it manages that gap: fewer invitations now, shorter processing times for the people already in. No reopening date was given, and the notice says new forms will not be received until further notice.
For parents who wanted to come this year, the route IRCC names in the same notice is the super visa. It is a visitor visa rather than permanent residence, so it settles nothing about status, but it allows a stay of five years at a time and gives multiple entries for up to ten years. IRCC also says it recently made the super visa more accessible by changing the income and health insurance requirements.
The two routes are judged on different things. Sponsorship turns on the pool and the invitation. The super visa turns on the sponsoring child's income and the parents' medical cover, which means a family shut out of one may still qualify for the other, and a family that qualifies for neither usually knows why once both tests are laid out.
