About three to nine weeks from the day you send us documents, and the spread is the honest answer rather than a hedge. Three stages run back to back and only one of them is unpredictable. We take about a week to check the documents, fill the application and file it, which is the part we control and the part we can compress if your dates are tight. The embassy then reviews the file in its online system, currently 7 to 40 days depending on load, and that is the stage that decides whether your trip happens on the dates you wanted. Once it clears, the papers are couriered and submitted, and the passport comes back in about 10 working days on normal service or 6 on express. Add them up at the fast end and you have three weeks. At the slow end, nine.

Those two numbers are a floor and a ceiling rather than an estimate, and treating them as an average is where people get into trouble. The review time moves with how many applications are sitting in the system at the moment yours joins it, and neither the embassy nor any consultant has a way to influence that. There is no queue to jump and no fee that moves you up it. Most of the files we have put through have cleared a long way short of 40 days, which is worth knowing and is not something we will build your dates on. We still quote the ceiling, because quoting you the floor would be selling a date we cannot deliver, and it is you rather than us who would be left holding the non-refundable ticket when the review took five weeks instead of two.

A China tourist visa needs no fingerprints, and will not until at least the end of 2026. China waives fingerprint collection for short-term visas covering a stay of 180 days or less, and the embassy in India extended that waiver to 31 December 2026 in a notice issued in December 2025. The practical effect is the one that matters from Gujarat: a tourist file does not require you to travel to Delhi in person, so the whole application can be done from where you live. That removes two days and a flight from the cost of the trip, which for a family is not a small thing. Applicants for the D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z categories sit outside the waiver and still give fingerprints, so if you are going to study, work or join family, this answer is not yours.

It depends on where you live, not on where your passport was issued, which is the opposite of the rule Turkey applies and is a common source of confusion. If you live in Maharashtra or Karnataka, the Consulate General in Mumbai decides your file. If you live in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh or West Bengal, it is the Consulate General in Kolkata. Everybody else, including everyone in Gujarat, is handled by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi. People from Gujarat routinely assume Mumbai because it is the nearer city and because so many other consular services are run from there, and it is simply not the right office for this. A file sent to the wrong mission is not forwarded on your behalf. It comes back, and the weeks it spent travelling are weeks off your preparation time.

The embassy names ₹1,00,000 as the deposit proof for a tourist visa, and the statement it asks for covers three months. The figure on its own is not the whole test, which is the part that catches people who arrange the number and nothing else. A balance that appears days before you apply and disappears days after reads as money borrowed for the visa rather than money that funds a holiday, and an officer who has seen that pattern a thousand times reads it in seconds. What matters is that the amount is held across the whole period the statement shows, with the ordinary credits and debits of your life running alongside it. Three months of a real account, sitting a little above the threshold, is stronger evidence than one month of a large number with nothing behind it. Plan the statement before the application, not after.

Book, but do not pay for anything you cannot get back. The embassy asks for an air ticket order and a hotel order as part of a tourist file, so a booking has to exist and the application is incomplete without one. What it does not ask for is a paid, non-refundable ticket, and buying one before the online review has even started is how people lose the fare and the dates in the same week. Held reservations or fully refundable bookings satisfy the requirement and cost you nothing if the timing slips, which on this route it often does. Airlines and most booking sites will hold an itinerary long enough for the file to be lodged, and your travel agent can issue an order without ticketing it. Pay properly once the passport is back with the visa in it and the dates are yours to keep.

Express shortens one of the two waits, not both. It applies at the embassy counter after your file has been submitted physically, taking that stage to about 6 working days instead of 10. It does nothing at all to the online review that comes first, which is the longer and far less predictable of the two, and which is almost always the reason a trip is at risk. So the four days you are buying come off the end of the process rather than the middle. If you are paying for express in the hope of rescuing a date, it is worth knowing which part of the queue you are actually jumping, because the answer is usually not the part that is holding you up. Where express genuinely earns its fee is when the review has already cleared and the only thing between you and the trip is the counter.
