Namibia visitor visa from India

Indian passport holders need a Namibian visa arranged before they travel. Namibia does not grant visa-free entry to Indian passports and does not offer them a visa on arrival, although a great many travel websites say otherwise and have said so for over a year. The visa-on-arrival arrangement that began on 1 April 2025, which those sites are usually quoting, applies to countries that previously needed no visa at all, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Japan. India was never in that group, so nothing about that change reaches an Indian passport. The only Indian exemption is for diplomatic and official service passports, which is not the document most people are travelling on. Arriving in Windhoek on the strength of a blog post is an expensive way to discover this, and the airline will usually stop you before the airport does.

The Namibian government fee is N$1,600, about ₹9,550, for an adult holding a passport from a country outside the African Union, which is the rate that applies to India. It is quoted in Namibian dollars rather than rupees, so the figure you actually pay moves with the exchange rate between the day you read this and the day you apply. It is payable whether the visa is granted or refused, which is the ordinary rule for visa fees and still surprises people. Our own fee is quoted separately once we have seen the shape of the trip, because a family of four travelling together and a single self-employed applicant need different amounts of work and it would be dishonest to price them the same. Budget for the insurance and the flights as well, since both have to exist before the file can be lodged.

Around 7 to 10 working days through the ministry's online portal, though Namibia does not guarantee a processing time and applications take longer in peak season or when a file needs extra screening. Treat the range as a normal case rather than a commitment, and apply well ahead of the trip so a slow fortnight does not become a cancelled holiday. There is a second timing trap at the other end, and it is the one that catches organised people. Do not apply so far ahead that the visa expires before you travel: it is valid for three months from the date it is issued, not from the date you arrive, so a visa granted in January is no use for an April departure. The window that works is roughly four to eight weeks out, which is late enough to be safe and early enough to absorb a delay.

Up to three months from the day you enter, and the visa itself is valid for three months from the day it is issued rather than from the day you arrive. Those are two separate clocks and it is worth checking both before you book. An extension of up to a further three months can be applied for at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Windhoek once you are in the country, so a longer stay is possible but is decided there rather than here. Namibian missions describe the overall visitor allowance as ninety days in a year, taken in one trip or split across several, which means time already spent in Namibia during the same year counts against what you get on the next entry. If you are planning two trips in a year, count the days across both before you plan the second one.

A completed application form, your original passport with six months of validity and at least three blank pages, two colour photographs with your name written on the back, six months of bank statements, a confirmed return ticket, proof of accommodation for the whole trip, travel and health insurance, and a motivation letter explaining the visit. If someone in Namibia is inviting you, add their invitation letter and proof of their legal status there. The three blank pages catch people out, because most other countries ask for two and nobody counts the pages in their own passport until somebody makes them. Check that first, since a passport short of pages has to be reissued and that is weeks rather than days. The motivation letter is the other item people underestimate: it is where the trip is explained in your own words, and a vague one reads as a trip nobody has actually planned.

A Namibian visitor visa does not permit work of any kind. A visitor visa covers a holiday, a safari, visiting family or friends, attending a workshop as a participant, medical treatment, and exploring business opportunities. It does not cover employment of any kind, paid or unpaid, and taking work on it puts both your status in Namibia and any future application at risk. Working in Namibia needs a work permit, which is a different application made before you go rather than something converted after you arrive. The line that trips people up is the business one, because exploring an opportunity and doing the job are not far apart in ordinary language and are a long way apart in immigration law. Attending meetings, viewing a site and negotiating are within the visitor category. Delivering the work, drawing a salary or filling a role is not, whoever is paying and wherever the money lands.
