Overview
What is the UK visitor visa?
The short answer
Indian passport holders apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa online, then attend a VFS centre in person for fingerprints and a photograph. The government fee is £135, about ₹17,500, for a visit of up to six months, and UKVI’s published service standard is 3 weeks from the biometrics appointment. Since 25 February 2026 the visa is issued digitally rather than as a sticker, so you must create a UKVI account and link the passport you will travel on, because the airline checks your permission electronically at check-in.

- You must set up a UKVI account, or the airline cannot check you in

- The long-term visa is usually the cheaper one
- The test is whether you will leave, not whether you can afford it
What it costs
What does a UK visitor visa cost?
Three of these costs are set by the government and one is ours. We list them separately rather than as one number that hides which is which.

What goes wrong
What actually sinks a UK file?
The patterns we see on real files, not a generic list. Each is where a file dies quietly, paired with what we do so yours does not.
Not creating the UKVI account before you fly
The visa is digital and lives in a UKVI online account. Carriers check your permission electronically against your passport at check-in. A granted visa that you have never logged in to view, or that is linked to a passport you have since replaced, is a problem discovered at the airport with your bags packed. This is new in 2026 and most advice in circulation was written when there was still a sticker to show.
Setting up the account and confirming the linked passport is part of the job, not something we leave you to find out about. If you renew your passport after the grant, we tell you what has to be updated and when.
Buying non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted
GOV.UK says explicitly that flight bookings are not useful evidence, and buying them early does not strengthen an application. What it does is turn a refusal into a refusal plus the cost of the tickets, and it can make an applicant look like they were always going to travel regardless of the decision.
We submit a tentative itinerary, which is what UKVI actually wants, and we tell you to hold off on paying for anything non-refundable until the decision is in.
A balance that appeared last month
UKVI flags sudden large deposits as potentially borrowed funds, and a healthy balance that does not match your salary pattern over six months does more harm than a smaller balance that plainly is yours. The caseworker is testing whether the money is really available to you, not whether the number is big enough.
We read the statements before they are filed and account for large credits in the covering letter: a matured deposit, a property sale, a named family member’s gift. An explained deposit is ordinary. An unexplained one is the question that sinks the file.
A UK refusal follows you to other countries
Visa application forms for the United States, Canada, Australia and the Schengen states all ask whether you have ever been refused a visa by another country, and you have to answer yes. A UK refusal is therefore not a self-contained setback: it is a disclosure you carry into every application you make afterwards, and reapplying without addressing the original reason usually produces a second refusal to disclose as well.
We do not file a UK application we do not think is ready, because the downside is not a lost fee. Where you have already been refused, we work from the actual refusal wording rather than resubmitting the same case in a new envelope.
How a refusal is worded, and what it meansApplying for six months out of habit
The £135 visa is the obvious choice and often the wrong one. Someone visiting a daughter in Manchester every year pays £135 a time, re-evidences their finances every time, and books biometrics every time, when £1,128 once would have covered ten years of exactly the same trips.
We ask how often you actually expect to go before we file anything, and where the long-term visa is the better buy we say so, even though it is the same work for us either way.
Do you need us
Can you apply for a UK visitor visa yourself?
You can. The Standard Visitor application is an online form you are able to complete yourself, and the £135 fee is the same whoever fills it in. What changes is which visa you apply for, and what you put in front of the caseworker.
| What decides it | On your own | With us |
|---|---|---|
| Which visa you apply for | The six-month visa is the default, and most people never price the two, five and ten-year ones against it. | Where you visit family more than once a year we do that sum first: a ten-year visa is a little over £110 a year against £135 every trip. |
| What counts as evidence | GOV.UK says flight bookings are not useful evidence, and a balance that appeared last month reads as borrowed. | We file the tentative itinerary UKVI actually asks for, and account for every large credit in the covering letter before a caseworker has to guess at it. |
| When the clock starts | The three-week service standard runs from your biometrics appointment, not from the day you start gathering documents. | We work backwards from the appointment date and say plainly when your dates make the decision window the real risk. |
| If it is refused | A refusal is a disclosure you carry into the American, Canadian, Australian and Schengen forms, all of which ask. | We do not file a UK application we do not think is ready, because the downside is not the lost fee. |
| What you pay | £135 to UKVI, about ₹17,500, not refunded if it is refused, plus the VFS charges. | The same to UKVI and to VFS, plus our ₹14,500 service charge. |

Who handles your file
Named, and accountable
For United Kingdom we act as consultants rather than as authorised representatives, because no equivalent licence exists to hold; the RCIC designation is Canadian. That does not lower the bar: your file is prepared and checked by Jeet Kacha, who runs our India operations, and the firm signs the verification rather than pointing at a licence that does not apply here.

United Kingdom: questions people actually ask
How much is a UK visitor visa from India?
The UKVI fee is £135, about ₹17,500, for a Standard Visitor visa allowing a stay of up to six months. Long-term visitor visas cost £506 for two years, £903 for five and £1,128 for ten, roughly ₹65,600, ₹1,17,000 and ₹1,46,100, and each of those still allows only six months per visit rather than a longer stay. The fee is set in sterling and collected in rupees at the Home Office rate on the day, so the rupee figure you pay will not match the one you read here. It is not refunded if you are refused. VFS charges its own service fee on top, which varies by centre and by whether you use any of its optional services, and our service charge is ₹14,500. Budget for all three rather than the headline number alone.
How long does a UK visitor visa take from India?
UKVI publishes a service standard of 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment for the Standard Visitor route, last revised on 26 June 2026. Read that carefully, because it is a target UKVI commits to rather than an observed average, and it is stated worldwide rather than for India specifically. It is not the same kind of number as a Canadian processing time, which is measured from files that have actually been decided. The clock also starts at biometrics, not at the moment you begin gathering documents, so the appointment date is the one to work backwards from. Priority and super priority services exist for an extra fee where availability allows, and availability is the operative word: they are not always open on the India route and they are worth checking rather than assuming. Apply early and treat the three weeks as the best case.
Does the UK still put a visa sticker in your passport?
The UK no longer puts a visa sticker in a visitor's passport. From 25 February 2026 the UK stopped issuing visa vignettes for visitors, and permission is granted digitally instead. You will not get anything in your passport, which unsettles people who have been travelling for thirty years on the assumption that a visa is something you can see. Your visa lives in a UKVI online account linked to your passport number, and airlines verify it electronically when you check in. Two things follow. You need to create that account rather than assume it exists, and you need to confirm the correct passport is linked to it before you travel, because a renewed passport whose number has changed will not match. Do both well before the day of the flight. A check-in desk is the wrong place to discover that the document proving your permission is attached to a passport in a drawer at home.
What is the genuine visitor test for a UK visa?
It is the requirement that you will actually leave the UK at the end of your visit, that you will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, that you have enough money for the trip without working or claiming public funds, and that the activity you are coming for is one a visitor is permitted to do. It is the ground most Indian refusals turn on, which makes it worth understanding rather than skimming. A bank balance alone does not answer it, because the question is not whether you can afford the trip but whether you will come back. Employment you would lose, property you own, family who depend on you and a coherent reason for this particular trip at this particular time are what answer it. The second limb catches people too: a pattern of long, repeated visits starts to look like living here.
How much bank balance is needed for a UK visitor visa?
There is no published minimum, and any figure you are quoted as one is somebody's guess. UKVI assesses whether your funds are enough for the specific trip you have described and consistent with the income you have declared, which means the same balance can be plenty for one application and thin for another. A balance that matches six months of ordinary salary credits is stronger evidence than a large sum that appeared shortly before you applied, because sudden unexplained deposits are flagged as potentially borrowed and put the whole file in doubt rather than only the money. What matters is that the funds are plainly yours and plainly sufficient for this trip. If a genuine large deposit does appear, document where it came from and submit that alongside the statement rather than leaving an officer to draw the obvious conclusion.
Should I buy flight tickets before applying for a UK visa?
Do not buy flight tickets before your UK visitor visa is decided. GOV.UK states that flight bookings are not among the documents that count as useful evidence, so buying them early does not help your application in the way people assume it does. Book refundable or tentative travel only, and hold the real purchase until the decision is in. The arithmetic is worth spelling out, because it is what changes minds. If your visa is refused you lose the money on non-refundable tickets, and the visa fee is not returned either, so an early purchase converts one loss into two without improving your chances of avoiding either. The instinct behind it is understandable: a paid ticket feels like proof that the trip is real. It is not read that way. A coherent itinerary and evidence of the life you are coming back to do the work a ticket cannot.
