Overview
What is the South Africa visitor visa?
The short answer
Indian passport holders can now enter South Africa on an Electronic Travel Authorisation instead of a visa. India was added to the ETA on 12 February 2026, and President Ramaphosa launched the system publicly on 12 August 2026. You apply at eta.dha.gov.za, take a live photograph of yourself as biometrics, pay ZAR 500 which is about ₹3,000, and the decision is returned instantly. It covers arrival by air at O. R. Tambo, Cape Town, Lanseria and King Shaka, and nowhere else.

What it costs
What does a South Africa visitor visa cost?
One of these costs is set by the government and one is ours. We list them separately rather than as one number that hides which is which.
Department of Home Affairs ETA processing fee
≈ ₹3,000ZAR 500see sources ↓Our service charge
₹1,000
Our feeWe charge ₹1,000 because the ETA really is a short form with an instant answer, and pricing it like a consulate file would be dishonest. What the fee buys is the part that is not automatic: confirming the ETA covers your actual routing, that a child on the trip has the birth certificate South Africa asks for, and that a previous refusal anywhere is dealt with before it meets an automated decision. If your trip is a straightforward holiday through one of the four airports, we will say so.
Eligibility
Who can apply?
- You hold an ordinary Indian passport, valid for at least six months. Diplomatic and official passports are handled separately.
- You are arriving by air at O. R. Tambo, Cape Town, Lanseria or King Shaka.
- You are travelling as a visitor: tourism, visiting family or friends, or business meetings. Work of any kind is excluded.
- You can take a live photograph of yourself during the application, which is how the biometrics are captured.
- You have somewhere to stay and the means to support yourself for the visit.

What goes wrong
What actually sinks a South Africa file?
The patterns we see on real files, not a generic list. Each is where a file dies quietly, paired with what we do so yours does not.
Flying into the wrong airport
The ETA covers O. R. Tambo, Cape Town, Lanseria and King Shaka. A cheaper routing into another airport, or a plan to drive up from a neighbouring country, quietly makes the authorisation useless, and it is not something the booking site will warn you about. This is the most likely way to be turned around at the border on an ETA that is genuinely valid.
We look at the actual itinerary, including the return and any side trip into Botswana, Zimbabwe or Eswatini and back, before the application is filed. Where a routing does not fit, we say so while the flights can still be changed.
Leaving and re-entering across a land border
A Kruger trip that crosses into Mozambique, or Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwean side, means leaving South Africa and coming back. The ETA gives multiple entries, but it is tied to arrival at those four airports, and a land re-entry is not the same thing. People plan this leg last, after the ETA is already approved.
We ask about side trips at the start, because that is when the answer is cheap. If a land re-entry is part of the plan, we tell you what it needs instead of letting you find out at Lebombo.
The passport you applied with is not the one you travel on
The authorisation is linked to a passport number. Renew the passport between applying and flying, or travel on a second passport, and the link breaks. This catches people whose passport was close to expiry when they applied and who did the sensible thing afterwards.
We check the expiry against the travel dates before filing. If a renewal is coming, we sequence it so the ETA is issued against the passport you will actually carry.
Treating 90 days at a time as a way to live there
Multiple entries and 90 days a visit look like an open door, and Home Affairs says in plain words that the ETA is not designed for repeated extended stays. A pattern of long visits with thin purposes is exactly what border officers look for, and the consequence is not a polite warning: it is a shorter grant, then a refusal, then a record that follows you.
If what you actually want is to spend a large part of the year in South Africa, we will tell you that the ETA is the wrong instrument and what the right one is, rather than filing the application that works this once and causes the problem next time.
A child without the birth certificate South Africa asks for
South Africa has required an unabridged birth certificate naming both parents for a travelling minor for years, and a consent affidavit where a parent is not on the trip. It is separate from the ETA, so an approved authorisation tells you nothing about whether the family is ready to board. Airlines check it at the Indian end.
We treat the child documents as part of the same job as the ETA, and we start them early, because an unabridged certificate is not something you obtain in a week.

Who handles your file
Named, and accountable
For South Africa we act as consultants rather than as authorised representatives, because no equivalent licence exists to hold; the RCIC designation is Canadian. That does not lower the bar: your file is prepared and checked by Jeet Kacha, who runs our India operations, and the firm signs the verification rather than pointing at a licence that does not apply here.

South Africa: questions people actually ask
Do Indians need a visa for South Africa in 2026?
Not for a straightforward holiday by air. Since 12 February 2026, Indian ordinary passport holders can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation instead of a visa, and the system was publicly launched on 12 August 2026. You apply online at eta.dha.gov.za, pay ZAR 500, and in most cases the outcome comes back instantly, which is a genuine change from what this route used to involve. The older visitor's visa through VFS has not disappeared, and it is still what you need in three situations: if you are arriving by land rather than by air, if you are landing at an airport the ETA does not cover, or if you are travelling for a purpose the authorisation does not allow. Work out which of the two applies to your actual itinerary before you start, because the answer is decided by the route rather than by the passport.
How much does the South Africa ETA cost?
ZAR 500, about ₹3,000, which is the processing fee the Department of Home Affairs adopted on 17 August 2026. It is paid by card at the point you submit the application rather than afterwards, so the payment and the application are a single sitting. Because the fee is set in rand, the rupee equivalent moves with the exchange rate and the figure here is an approximation rather than the amount that will leave your account. The practical warning on this route is about the card rather than the fee. Indian cards are frequently declined on a first international transaction, and a decline mid-application is more disruptive here than a simple retry, because the form and the payment are tied together. Enable the card for overseas use with your bank before you start, and use one you have paid abroad with if you have the choice.
Which airports accept the South Africa ETA?
Four: O. R. Tambo in Johannesburg, Cape Town International, Lanseria, and King Shaka in Durban. Check that list against your ticket before you apply, because arriving at an airport outside it means the authorisation does not cover you however valid it is. A lot of the guidance published earlier in 2026 lists only the first three, since King Shaka was added afterwards, so an article that looks recent can still be a version behind. The Home Affairs portal is the thing to trust here rather than a travel site, and it is worth a look on the day you apply. Land borders such as Beitbridge and Lebombo are due to be added later in 2026, which will change this answer. Until they are, arriving overland or at any other airport needs the older visitor's visa through VFS.
How long can I stay in South Africa on an ETA?
Up to 90 days per visit, with multiple entries while the authorisation is valid, and one extension of up to 90 days that you can apply for online from inside the country. On paper that is a generous allowance and for an ordinary holiday it is more than anyone needs. Home Affairs also says the ETA is not designed to allow repeated extended stays, and that sentence is doing real work rather than sitting there as boilerplate. Treating the authorisation as a way to live in South Africa in three-month instalments is a reliable way to have a border officer cut your next stay short or refuse entry altogether, and the refusal happens at the airport rather than at the application stage where you could argue with it. If the plan is longer-term residence, this is the wrong document to build it on.
Can I work in South Africa on an ETA?
A South African Electronic Travel Authorisation does not permit work. The Department of Home Affairs states directly that work is not permitted on an Electronic Travel Authorisation, so there is no grey area to read into it. The authorisation covers tourism and visits, and that does include business meetings and conferences, which is the distinction people most often need. Attending is fine. Delivering is not. Any paid activity, or work that displaces a role a local person would otherwise fill, needs a work visa applied for separately and in advance rather than converted from an ETA after you arrive. Working on the authorisation puts both your current entry and every later application at risk, and South Africa records the outcome in the same system that will read your next one. If the trip has a working component, sort out the right permission before the flights.
Do I still need a visa if I already have an ETA and I am driving in from Zimbabwe?
A South African ETA does not cover a land crossing from Zimbabwe, so you still need a visitor's visa. The ETA authorises arrival by air at four named airports, so a land crossing sits outside what it covers even when the authorisation itself is valid, paid for and completely unused. Validity is not the test. The mode and point of entry are. This matters most on the classic version of this trip, which flies into Johannesburg, drives up to Victoria Falls, and comes back into South Africa overland: the outbound leg is covered and the return leg is not, and the problem is discovered at a border post rather than at an airline desk where somebody might have caught it. Plan the whole route before you apply, because the answer changes what you should be applying for in the first place. A trip with any land re-entry needs the older visitor's visa through VFS.
